Club History |
Woodbridge Ath FC was formed in 1995, as there was a gap in the market for intermediate players, this was after Woodbridge Town had joined the Jewson League in 1990-91. Applications were made to the Suffolk & Ipswich League (SIL) and a small working committee was created. Starting in Division 4 of the SIL, WAFC gained promotion to Div 3 at their first attempt. In our 2nd season we became inundated with players and so formed a reserve side. The First Team went on to maintain their run and became Div 3 champions. The Reserves also had a good first season gaining promotion. All of this made Woodbridge Athletic "Club of the Year" The 1997/98 Season saw WAFC make an unbeaten 22 game run in Div 2 and finish 2nd at our first attempt, not to be outdone the Reserves had also moved into a promotion place and had been on 2 exciting cup runs. More youngsters had moved from the Reserves to the First Team. The 1998/99 Season saw the First Team play in Div 1. This turned out to be a hard season for WAFC and with most of the players playing still under 20 years old WAFC managed to consolidate their league status The 1999/2000 Season began in a totally different way and very soon it was seen that WAFC were back to their winning ways eventually gaining promotion to the SIL Senior Division. The 2000/01 & 2001/02 Seasons came and went and the First team managed to hold senior status. The 2002/03 saw WAFC Reserves get off to an amazing start and this saw the team joint top after 7 games and they were unbeaten! This was marred by several disappointments due to player unavailability. The First Team had also made a good start and were unbeaten after the first 5 games but eventually fell away to the extent that WAFC lost their Senior Status and were relegated back to Div 1 Season 2007/2008 First team have had a great season and have managed to obtain back Senior Status and the reserves finished 4th in intermediate B. We also have won Junior Club of the season.
